Evaluation Questions

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product is an opening.
We start it off as normal with the institution at the beginning of the film and titles as the film starts starting with star actor and the titles end with the name of the film (The Awakening). I think the edits we have made are to a acceptable quality and I think they are to a satisfactory standard.

We used a match on action shot, a bust shot, a shot reverse shot combined with over the shoulder shot , long shot and a medium long shot.

This shows we used a verity of different shots which in the long run will hopefully get us
I think that this sticks to the media convention for horror movies, as it starts out like a normal situation, with young helpless women that are all alone in a big house. It give the audience and innocents point of view.
 higher marks that we want.

2. How does your media product represent particular social

 groups?

I think our film actually broke general convection because it

actually to opposites that are best friend and the less girly/cool one

has the upper hand in the friendship unlike general convention

which dictates that the more popular one would generally have the

 upper hand in the friendship.

The staker takes the less popular girl because she see him and he

doesn't know what to do so in a moment of panic he drags her out

of bed and nocks her out with a blunt object.

This breaks convection because everything tends you usually go

quite smoothly at the begging for most film and our issue starts

right at the start of the film with an unintentional abduction.

3. What kind of institution might distibute your media product

and why?

I dont think touchstone would distribute our film as it is a bit
violent for the family entertainment business.
we decided to use universal as we know they have produced horror in the past.

We know tis s they produced such classics as “Frankenstein’s Monster” and “Dracula”. This also made us more confidants that our film would sell, because universal are such a large and big budget production company. That as soon as people would see the logo of universal, they would be interested in the film.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

15-25 year olds as we think they have an adult mind but they will

still enjoy the scary story line.

5. How did you attract /adress your audience?

To attract the audience at the start we used  an argument to draw

there attention to the screen before we started the suspense

building.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have managed to build on my editorial skills (which was one of my aims at the begging of the year) I have learn how to use camera shots in a film and how to finically carry out my camera shots. The final thing I have leant from this editing process is the way to do
titles within my film.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you

have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel I have learnt so such from this process and I feel that we as a

I feel like my story telling skills with in the film has improved drastically.

I also feel that my camera and editing skills have majorly improved since the first task we did with the camera and with final cut.
have achieved so much.

Evaluation
What did you do?
Summery of idea - strange man is stalking Lois Smith, he comes to her house and lets himself in using a key he found under a plant pot. He creeps around the house then ends up going upstairs to find Lois Smith. Thinking she would be alone he goes into her room, as he is looking over the bed Amy tyler awakes to find him staring at the both she then says "what are you doing?" so he drags her out of bed and knocks her out. He then drags her outside to his car and shuts the door behind him, then we cut to the scene of Lois Smith waking up.

After opening - After the opening Lois smith searches for her friend Amy Tyler when she is nowhere to be seen she begins to ring her phone then noticing her phone is gone she rings the police. They say there is nothing they can do until she has been missing for 24hours. In which time she starts to get very strange phone calls from the man stalking her. He sends her pictures of Amy Tyler unconscious body and starts getting her to perform tasks to get her friend back. When she finally finds Amy Tyler she comes face to face with the man who has been stalking her. She pretends this hole ordeal has made her fall madly in love with him and he believes her. She sets Amy Tyler free and tells her to run as fast as she can to get help. But in an unexpected twist the man stabs Lois Smith in the stomach saying ''I wanted you'' meaning he never meant to harm Amy Tyler he really just wanted to kill Lois smith.

Why did you do the things the way you did?
When we edited the video we cut from the two girls falling asleep to the a man creeping around outside the house. This is so we could build tension and make sure our audience nows that there is something about to happen. When we filmed the video we waited for there to be be no cars on the road this was to  give the illusion it was the dead of night and nobody would see the stalker creeping around outside the house.
How well did it work?
I think it worked well because when we got feed back on the video everyone understood the storyline very well and the effect and it created a good structure to our video.
we also chose for the two girl to be best friends because we wanted real emotional attachment between them so it seemed very plausible that she would go looking for her after.
What went well?
The editing process went considerably well as we managed to make all the shots work and we managed to merge them together very well.
The wooden stairs worked perfectly and made all the nosies that we needed for our shots which meant we could make a really creepy looking scene.
When Amy Tyler is being dragged down the stairs in my opinion is the best shot in the opening because it truly looks as if she is being dragged away by a creepy man.
What could we have improved on?
One of the shots was the wrong way round and I think we should have really noticed it earlier to re-film it and i think that our lighting way a bit low in the first scene so we could of changed that to make it a bit more clear to see.
Research?
We research the clothing that we decided to use and what heavy duty shoes would be best for making noise on creaky stairs, we did this so we could see all of the costumes we would need.
creativity/imagination?
Our storyline was completely our own idea and we never had trouble with coming up with new ideas how ever when it came to the name of the characters we decided to keep the first names the same because our characters did suit any other names and we already thought Lois was a very girly name already.
props?

  • phone
  • hairdryer
  • teddy bears
  • blankets
  • pillows
  • makeup
  • lamp
  • magazines

Editing skills?
I think we have achieved quite a lot in this film and I think that our editing skills have progressed quite a lot from this film.
I dont think our editing skills are perfect but i think we have made a lot of progress with our film because we didn't know what we were doing when we first started out.

Audience feed back

We decided to post our video on a social networking site called Facebook. We did this as we felt people would be more likely to watch it if was people we knew. We also knew that people who know us would have given their honest opinion and would have felt no need to hold back what they really thought. We also knew our friends were the ages of our target audience so we were very excited to see what they had to say.

When we uploaded it on Facebook we got many people saying they liked it and we didn’t have anyone who said that they couldn’t understand the storyline which was great for us because that was one of the things we were most worried about.

When uploading it to Facebook our friends also pointed out thing we didn’t notice such as a lake of titles and slight shakes in the camera work.
films that inspired our film
We really admired this film as we used the idea of young defenceless teenagers in the start of our movie as well. We really admired the way it is so normal at the start of the movie, which makes it even more scary as it seems so believable and like it was such a normal situation that escalated so quickly into an abnormal situation.
The silence of the lambs
We used the idea of a 'mad man' kidnapper in our film as we wanted it to seem realistic and believable. We where very inspired by this film as its gave us the idea of the kidnapping. How ever we changed a lot of thing so we didn't feel like we where at any point like we were copping ideas or plagiarising any other films such as this one. We change the 'mad man' kidnapper into a stacker so the attack on the teenagers didn't seem too random and we also made the kidnapper take the wrong victim to make the plot more unique.
paranormal activity
We loved the idea of the realistic feel that this movie had. the rawness of the shots and the music less soundtrack made it feel extremely believable. So we decided to adopt that idea by making the shots raw and music less to create this normal house hold feeling.

character profile
 Name: ''D'' - David Harrison
age: 22
height: 6'2
weight: 10st
shoe size: 9
eye colour: Brown
hair colour: Brown
family history: A family history of phycotic behaviour

Costume – we decided to go for a bit more or a grungy look when it came to our kidnapper. We used a green parker coat that was too big, to create the effect of sloppiness like he doesn’t care about his appearance. We added to this effect by using the timberland boots which luckily we had to hand already, which saved us a lot of money. The boots we felt added to the effect because they were very big and clunky which and looked very durable. Which we thought would being something our character would want.

costume choice
A simple jumper from gap that cost us £23.
the colour we thought really showed who the character lois really is.
we made sure is was baggy to give a relaxed feel to the look, although we still wanted to push the idea that lois smith is a very girly girl, that always cares about her appearance.
we decided to go with a skull all in one pyjama set for Amy. we decided this because we were trying to create the feel of comfort with this charter.
character profile

We decided to go for a no makeup look as this character is meant to be not very bothered with her appearance and almost a complete opposite to 'Lois Smith' even though they are best friends.

Weather planning

We wanted the weather to reflect the mood of the film in other words we wanted it to have pathetic fallacy. So we used the BBC weather website to determine when we were going to film. We needed. Also for it to be dark and gloomy so we chose the time late at night, to help create effect. The rain we felt really added to our location as it made the house seem so much more warm and comforting like any other normal home.

Location

We have decided to have our filming take place at my home. We have decided this because we need a natural looking environment that looks like a female teenagers bedroom and that also looks like a normal family home. We chose my house purely for connivance as I am the only child in my house it is very quite and peaceful which made i the perfect place as we needed it to seem it was the dead of night.

shed - We also had the idea of using my shed for one of the senses as it was part of our storyline and we would use fake blood to smear everywhere inside the shed.

bedroom - we needed the bedroom to have a girly essence to it so we had the idea of putting fashion magazines and make up all around the room to really create a girly feel.

stairs - I told the group that recently the carpet was torn up from my stairs in my hallway which made is really loud and squeaky to walk on. So we decided to film before I got new carpet on my stairs as we loved the idea of a really dramatic noise as we were pulling someone down the stairs, and when the murderer is going up the stairs it will create more suspense.

We used garage band to create our music.

When making our music we wanted 3 key elements from our music.

·      We wanted it to build suspense

·      We wanted a clear climax in the music

·      And we wanted it to slow down and fade at the end.

We managed to achieve this by creating a slow start but we allowed it to get slightly
higher and higher. Then when we wanted the music to reach the climax we added and
very high sound then dropped it almost straight after.
